Obituary for James Terry

On December 5, 2022, James earned his wings and departed his earthly life. James was born on October 15, 1937 at 2:00am to the late Gussie and Will Terry in Schley County, Ellaville Georgia.
After finishing high school, James Terry settled in Rochester, New York in 1957. Upon settling in Rochester, New York, he married the late Nevaughn Terry and to that union God blessed them with two children: Shari and James Jr. James worked at the Case Heart Hospital, Strong Hospital, and retired from the Kenneth B. Keating Federal Building after 15 years.

James had a strong love for his family and community. He resided at 374 Tremont Street from 1962 until his death in 2022 at his home. He was the “CEO of Tremont Street”! It was regular and common nature for members of the community, friends, nephews, and nieces to spend time with James on his front stoop enjoying food, making memories, and just fellowshipping. Sometimes on Sunday morning, he would sit on the front or back porch of his home to hear the worship service from Victorious Living Church which he greatly respected and admired. Mr. Terry had a sense of humor that was direct and electrifying which was his way of showing love and that he liked you.

He was an avid gardener where he would grow crops (peppers, potatoes, collard greens, and onions) in which he would give to members of the neighborhood, family, and friends. This is something that he loved to do and always had a desire to do even when he started to experience excruciating back pain, leg pain, and deteriorating eyesight. His only car of choice EVER was the Ford Mustang and that is the only car that he drove!! He would repair the Mustang if he blew the engine out or if the car needed any other repairs from his drag racing down Tremont Street!

Predeceased by his parents, Will Terry and Mrs. Gussie Terry; sisters, Gladys Terry, Emma Jean Sanders, Willie Mae Govan; brother, Rufus Terry; son, Leonard James Terry; great-great niece Da’miiyah Sides; brothers-in-law, Carl Dennis, Wardell Johnson, and Percy Sanders, Sr.

James will be greatly missed by his loving family. He leaves loving memories with his children, daughter, Shari Terry of Woodbridge, Virginia and son James Terry, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Betty Johnson and Mary Dennis; one brother Luther Terry all of Rochester, NY; 1 grandchild, James “Buddy” Earl Terry of San Antonio, TX. He leaves 30 nieces and nephews, and 20 great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
